Collection: Judgement Day: 50 Years On
Judgement of Paris
The Judgment of Paris, a quiet tasting in Paris reshaped the global wine landscape.
Organised by Steven Spurrier on May 24th 1976, the Judgement of Paris tasting set out to compare the best of France against a selection of Californian wines which were, at the time, still considered outsiders. What followed was one of the most significant upsets in wine history. California wines not only held their own; they won.
For Bordeaux and Burgundy, long regarded as the unquestioned benchmark, the result was seismic. For Napa Valley, it marked the beginning of international legitimacy. For the wider wine world, it was the moment the hierarchy began to shift.
Fifty years on, the legacy of that tasting continues to shape both perception and pricing. The idea that great wine could come from beyond Europe is now obvious - but in 1976, it was revolutionary. Twenty years ago, the story was revisited in the Judgment of Paris 30th Anniversary Tasting. This was not a one-off result or a youthful anomaly. The Californian wines once again performed at the highest level, reinforcing what the original tasting had suggested: quality, not geography, defines greatness.
Today, that philosophy underpins the modern fine wine market. Regions compete on craftsmanship, terroir expression, and consistency - not just history. For investors and collectors alike, this shift has opened the door to diversification, opportunity, and new narratives.
Few comparisons capture this evolution better than California versus Bordeaux. On one side, Napa Valley - precise, powerful, and driven by innovation. On the other, Bordeaux - structured, age-worthy, and steeped in tradition.
Two wines, in particular, bring this contrast into sharp focus: Ridge Monte Bello and Château Mouton Rothschild.
Ridge’s Monte Bello has long been a standard-bearer for California’s fine wine credentials - a wine that consistently delivers structure, longevity, and critical acclaim. Mouton Rothschild, a First Growth, represents the pinnacle of Bordeaux prestige, combining power with refinement and an unmatched track record in the secondary market.
Both wines sit at the top of their respective worlds. Both tell the story that began in 1976.
And today, you don’t need to take history’s word for it.
You can taste the comparison yourself.
Explore both wines now here on CB Uncorked and decide where you stand - Old World, New World, or somewhere in between.
