Collection: Seasonal Sips: Spring

Cult & Boutique's Spring Bouquet

Spring is here! And how could we not indulge in flowers? Amidst our broad selection of delicious wines, there are some labels which just jump out and scream 'spring', helping us venerate the vernal.

Bret Brothers, Bret Nat, NV

Bret Brothers are a small, boutique operation out of burgundy, specialising in 'minimal intervention' and organic winemaking. This intriguing, fruity, funky, bright take on the Pétillant Naturel (naturally sparkling), or Pet-Nat for short, style is a wonderful entry to their world: distinctive, delicious, affordable. With notes of apple, pear, citrus, and with a fine mousse of bubbles, this makes for a wonderful aperitif, or a perfect picnic pour.

Paserene, Union, 2019

The label here alone drags you into the vernal season, the wide fields, tapestries of trees, the open expanse of clear skies... Inside the bottle: an explosive bouquet of red fruits, dried herbs, and flowers, pairing perfectly with those meats abstained from during lent. This South African Syrah really competes at its price range, and proves time and time again why Paserene are a must try from the Western Cape.

Ben Haines, Yarra Valley Chardonnay, 2021

Alternatively, for something still, lean, and crisp, Ben Haines' Yarra Valley Chardonnay lends clean and fresh flavours in good measure. Ben Haines is one of Australia's premier low-intervention winemakers, running a small yet critically successful wine project across the countries diverse terroir. The 2021 Yarra Valley Chardonnay highlights the precision of Ben's techniques, resulting in peach, apple, melon, lemon, and wet pebbles in the finish. A remarkably clean and balanced Chardonnay so quaffable it seems to drink itself.

Terroir et Talents, Les Enracines, 2023

Terroirs et Talents are one of Beaujolais' top natural wine makers, bringing finesse and diligence to the style. Les Enracines is a sulphate free wine made from Gamay, and is deliciously fresh, vibrant, soft, and gently, like drinking a field of strawberries and cherries. A truly wonderful, accessible, wine.

Wayfarer, The Estate Chardonnay, 2020

Turning from the flowers, looking up into the sky, we see drifting those longer and longer sojourns of that delightful attendant of the day: the sun. Immediately the mind leaps toward the aureate allure of Californian Chardonnays. Something about those gold hues, the oak, the heavy fruits, citrus oil, intensely bright florals, and zippy acidity just evoke within me the burst of the buds, fresh winds, and, of course, the sun. Such as the Wayfarer Estate Chardonnay 2020, which captures all that passion and intensity in the bottle. Wayfarer is the West Sonoma Coast project of Cleo Pahlmeyer, daughter of Jayson Pahlmeyer whose own wines are equally impressive.
